A word used to describe the Afghan Hound is an "Aristocrat".
With its long, silky topknot, peculiar coat pattern, large feet and prominent hipbones, this unusual looking breed is truly the "King of Dogs" of all the registered breeds. Even though his exotic, Eastern looking expression gives the impression if a dignified air of royalty, the Afghan Hound has a long history as a swift hunter and at the same time, a devoted companion.
The Afghan Hound dates back to 126BC and was discovered by the Western world in one of the extensive Steppe regions of central Asia  . . .Afghanistan. According to ancient paintings and writings, the breed was used by wandering tent-living Nomads native to this region for hunting the mountainous countryside of Northern Afghanistan, thus explaining its long coat and profuse trouserings. At the same time, Afghan Hounds performed as pampered pets lying at the feet of royalty in stately gardens and courtyards. Working in pairs, the Afghans speed, endurance and fierce hunting ability to chase at top speed and quickly overtake prey enabled Afghans  to aid their masters in bringing down leopards and falcons.
Centuries later, the Afghan Hound is still able to perform the functions for which it was originally bred. Considered a sighthound ( a breed that hunts by sight rather than scent), its lean body shape and pivitol hipbones enable it to chase game at speeds up to 35mph avoiding and leaping obstacles and making turns that are impossible for most breeds.
Due to selective breeding, the Afghan Hound is not a popular breed. But aristocracy is not common either...reserved for a small percentage. The need for constant maintenance due to its extensive coat results in the Afghan Hound not being a popular breed. They are exquisitely mannered and non-demanding but do not give affection freely. But once you have earned his love, your Afghan will be your forever devoted friend. Afghan Hounds are definitely not a breed for everyone, but once you have been captivated by their beauty, enlightened by their good humor and spellbound by their attitude and ability to instantly change personalities, you will wonder how you ever lived without this presence in your life.
Dignified yet clown-like . . .non-demanding yet faithful friend, the Afghan Hound is truly the breed of distinction.
